Papers consist primarily of Marquard's letters, 1914-1915, to his mother, Margaret Murray Marquard, in South Africa. These were written while he was a student at Teachers College. The last letter was written while on board the S.S. BALTIC. Also included are a letter from the president of the fraternity Alpha Chi Rho to Marquard's mother after his death, ca. 1918; a letter, 1915, from Marquard to his uncle Charles Murray, then acting Superintendant General of Education in the Cape Province, South Africa; a letter, 1914, from Dr. Charles T. Loram (active in South African education) to Charles Murray; a biographical sketch of Marquard by his brother Leo Marquard; and two photographs showing John Marquard and others.
